Life Stories

DETERMINATION & PERSEVERANCE PAYS

Mrs. Sangeetha Uday Kamble, a resident of Gaunal Village, Hukkeri taluk, Belgaum district and her husband were daily wage earners who toiled hard to bring up their two children, a boy and a girl. Though they were hard working, it was difficult for them to eke out a living, feed themselves and take care of the basic necessities of life.

Under such dire circumstances, she came into contact with the Animators of Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society who work at grassroots level to educate and empower women through formation of Self Help Groups and provide training on need basis to make the women self reliant under the Women Empowerment Programme supported by KROSS. She understood the need to be self reliant and joined Kaveri Self Help Group and started attending all trainings. The training on Women in Micro Enterprise inspired her to venture into her own enterprise for which she borrowed Rs.15,000 from the Self Help Group and started a small shop selling day to day necessities and a canteen through which she catered tea/coffee and snacks.

As this business needed full time attention she left going out for daily wage work but her husband continued and in the evening, he started to help her out. Over a short period of time her business improved and today she is able to rake in a profit of Rs.400 per day after deducting all her expenses. She has been able to repay the loan taken from her Self Help Group besides which she is daily saving a sum of Rs.150.

Today she is proud of herself and also the support she got from her husband and family members. Now her only dream is to educate her children well and see them settled in life besides further improving the economic status of her family.

She voices her gratefulness to Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society who have been instrumental in her rising up the ladder and KROSS who initiated the Women Empowerment Programme.
