Story of change

Housewife to enterpreneur
Triveni, a housewife, struggled to provide two meals a day for her family of four with the meagre earnings of her husband, an auto driver. She joined the Triveni Sindhu Self-Help Group, formed by CMSSS in Chikmagalur and started saving small amounts. Of the 20 women in her group, 8 were engaged in making raw agarbathis. They had to walk 8 kms everyday to the agarbathi factory and get raw materials.

Triveni saw an opportunity to start a small enterprise. She took a loan of Rs 10,000 from her self-help group, hired a place and started supplying raw materials from the factory. In 2006, she took an additional loan of Rs 45,000 and started AMS Agarbathi works. Today, 300 women are working in the unit, which gives a daily output of 60 kg of agarbathis. Two autorikshaws were purchased which helped to reduce rental costs. The women are now planning to take up additional work such as scenting.
